One of the best post players coming out of junior college, earning second-team junior college All-America honors...a tough inside defender and rebounder who can run the court well for a big man...a strong, durable player who shot 60 percent last season while helping his team to a 34-2 record and a spot at the national tournament.
At Southeastern Illinois Community College
Had an outstanding sophomore season for Southeastern Illinois, averaging 15.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks...also shot 60.5 percent from the floor and averaged 1.6 steals...earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors and was a first-team all-Region XXIV selection...edged out for region MVP honors in a close vote to Southwestern Illinois’ Marcellus Sommerville...named to the all-tournament team at the NJCAA national tournament...leader on one of the best junior college teams in the nation in 2002-03...his SEICC squad ended the season with a school-record 34-2 record, winning the Great Rivers Athletic Conference title and the NJCAA Region XXIV championship...squad was rated No. 2 in the final NJCAA poll and advanced to the NJCAA national tournament, losing in the opening round to eventual national champion and top-ranked Southeastern Iowa...SEICC led almost the entire game until Southeastern pulled away 74-67...Staple was the only Falcon to score in the final 11 minutes of the game, scoring nine of his game-high 22 points in that span...SEICC bounced back to win its final three games in the tournament (Western Nebraska CC, 72-66; Yavapai, 92-69; Coffeyville, 87-77) to finish seventh place...scored 20 points (7-10 FG, 6-7 FT) in the regional final vs. Wabash Valley and posted 31 points vs. Wabash in their first meeting of the season...Wabash had made two-straight NJCAA appearances and was the 2001 NJCAA champion...scored 20 points vs. Southwestern Illinois...tallied 21 points vs. Kaskaskia...is the second SEICC player to earn second-team NJCAA All-America honors in the last two seasons...current Cyclone Tim Barnes was a second-team Juco All-American for SEICC...Staple was a starter on the 2001-02 SEICC squad that went 26-7 and made the Region XXIV championship game...averaged 12.3 points and 7.4 rebounds as a freshman...scored 23 points vs. John A. Logan, helping SEICC advance to the regional finals....at the beginning of the year, was named the sixth-best power forward in the nation by Rick Ball Ballplayers report...coached in junior college by Todd Franklin...chose ISU over Western Kentucky, Georgia and Mississippi State.
