Heralded Recruit Speaks to CN

Big-city living appeals to Florida prep (TI)

After watching the most celebrated commitment in the Dan McCarney era take an official visit to Minnesota last weekend, Iowa State fans can start to worry.

Cyclone Nation caught up with Delray Beach (Fla.) Atlantic High safety Brandon Owens Monday night and got the news ISU recruitniks had been worried about for weeks. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder has opened up his recruiting and is seriously considering the Gophers.

"I don't really have a favorite right now," said Owens, who returned from Minneapolis last night. "I like some things about both programs. I saw some things in Minnesota that Iowa State doesn't have. I like the campus being in a big city and it seemed like there's a lot more to do."

Asked when he would make his final decision, Owens replied, "It will probably either be on Wednesday or Thursday."

ISU is sending assistant coach Marty Fine to Florida in hopes of getting Owens to reaffirm his commitment. Fine arrived in Delray Beach Monday night. Head coach Dan McCarney already made an in-home visit last month, making his level of contact somewhat limited at this point.

Owens' teammate and long-time friend Steve Allen committed to the Cyclones in December and appears to be sticking with his original choice.

Would Allen's status make a difference in where Owens goes?

"It's probably not going to be too much of a factor," he said. "It doesn't matter which school. But it would be nice to have a friend there with me."
