ISU Lands 2011 Commitment

Cyclone Sports Report goes one-on-one with Milwaukee (WI) Hamilton High School's Elgin Cook on what led to his commitment to Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: What ultimately led to your commitment today?

Elgin Cook: I just felt really comfortable at Iowa State and I can really relate to all the players. The fact that they have three guys from Wisconsin played a huge role because I'm good friends with them.

CSR: Who did you hang out with the most during your visit this weekend?

EC: Diante Garrett and Antwon Oliver were the guys that I hung out with the most but I also got to hang out with Craig Brackins and the rest of the team for most of the weekend. Diante and Antwon showed me all over campus and I really liked everything.

CSR: What else did you do during your visit?

EC: I met with all the basketball coaches and they showed me around all the facilities and I also got to meet with the strength and conditioning coach. I also got to check out the practice facility which is really nice and should really benefit the players because it's available 24 hours a day. I also got to play with the Iowa State players.

CSR: How did you do?

EC: I didn't do to great on offense the first day but I thought I played good defense. The second day I thought I played a lot better.

CSR: What is your relationship like with the Iowa State coaches?

EC: I just really trust Coach T.J. (Otzelberger) a lot and he was at a number of my games this summer along with Coach McDermott which I really appreciated. Coach T.J. talks to me a lot about basketball but also about off the court stuff and he really wants to help me in life which is really important to me. I really enjoyed hanging out with Coach McDermott and I like that he's always talking with me about getting better. He told me that if I really focus hard that big things can happen for me. Diante also told me that Coach McDermott is a really good coach and that he really knows what he is talking about.

CSR: Iowa State was your only offer at the time. What other schools were pursuing you the hardest?

EC: Purdue, Miami (Fla.), Oregon, Marquette, and Northern Iowa.

CSR: Iowa State will be playing some games in the Chicagoland area this season. Will you be making the trip from Milwaukee to come and see them play?

EC: Yeah, I definitely hope to get to the Duke game and the St. Louis game. I'll also be trying to get to some Iowa State home games.

CSR: What does your family and coaches think of your early decision?

EC: My family and coaches said that it was my decision and they think it was a great idea because now I can just focus on basketball and my grades. They just told me to keep working hard and that the sky is the limit.

CSR: So does this commitment end your recruitment?

EC: I think Iowa State is the right place for me. I think I'm 100 percent committed to them. Recommended Stories
