ISU Targets JC Linebacker

With four linebackers graduating after the upcoming season, Iowa State has decided to target a more experienced linebacker who plays for North Dakota State College of Science. Cyclone Sports Report goes one-on-one with Derek Earls.

Cyclone Sports Report: What schools are showing you the most interest?

Derek Earls: I have scholarship offers from Colorado and Iowa State. The other two schools that haven't offered but that are recruiting me the hardest are Arizona and Northern Illinois.

CSR: How long has Iowa State been recruiting you?

DE: First my coach sent them my tape and then about two weeks ago Coach Burnham called to tell me that they were very interested in me.

CSR: How important is it to you that Iowa State will be graduating four of their top linebackers?

DE: It's definitely a factor that I will consider but it is not the only thing that I look at. The most important thing is to find a school that is best for me where I get along with the coaches real well.

CSR: What does Coach Rhoads like about your game?

DE: He just said that he really liked the energy that I bring and the way that I play football. He told me that he likes that I get to the ball quickly and that I'm a hard hitter.

CSR: What did you like about Coach Rhoads when you were talking with him?

DE: He's just really nice to talk to and seemed easy to get along with. You can tell that he would definitely help you and keep pushing you as a player.

CSR: Will you be taking a visit to Iowa State in the near future?

DE: I might take a few unofficial visits this summer but not right now during the spring. The fall is when I plan on taking my visits. I'm wide open right now and just looking at all my options.
