CSR Goes One-On-One With Kent St. Head Coach

Cyclone Sports Report talked with Kent State Head Coach Doug Martin to find out his view on the upcoming game against Iowa State.

Q: Is it tougher going into a game having to prepare for two quarterbacks?

A: It's always a problem because different guys have different abilities. It does make a little bit of difference because you kind of have two game plans going. They didn't do a great deal of different things so far just in one game looking at the quarterbacks but you can see where they probably have more plans to expand that for each one of them so it could be difficult.

Q: Talk about coming into Jack Trice Stadium and having success last year. Do you feel this gives you an advantage this year?

A: I don't know if there is any advantage. I'll tell you what, coming in last year I was really impressed with the whole atmosphere of that game. I had never been to Iowa State before and I thought the fans were outstanding. It's a tough place to play and I don't think it's an advantage for us. In fact I think Iowa State will be more focused and I'll also tell you that they are a much, much better team than last year. To be honest with you, we caught them at the perfect time. It was the first game and their staff's first game together. Had we played them later in the year I don't think we would have been even close.

Q: You guys played against a tough Boston College defense last week and you were shutout. What do you think needs to improve most offensively going into this game against Iowa State?

A: We had a really tough time protecting the quarterback. Boston College had a really good front and at the same time I'm not sure how well we're pass protecting right now. We got pushed around up the middle and Iowa State's got some pretty big guys up the middle also so that's a real concern for us. We usually feel pretty confident that we can run the ball with either Eugene James and a mobile quarterback but pass protection is a real issue for us.

Q: How did you think your defense did for the first game of the season?

I was happy with our defense but we didn't tackle well early in the game and that led to a long touchdown run that should never have happened. We missed two tackles and we were kind of out of position. However, the defense played real well in the second half. We really settled down and started playing much better.
