Cyclones High On Georgia Linebacker
Joel Kight

Posted Jul 31, 2008

Winning the Georgia 5A Player of the Year was a nice accomplishment for Martin Luther King High School's Joel Kight but he's looking to attain a much bigger goal in the future.

"It was really exciting winning the award," he said. "But now I know that I just got to keep working harder because I eventually want to get to the NFL." If Kight accomplishes his goal he would be the second family member to do so as his brother Kelvin played for the New England Patriots in 2006.

The 5-foot-9, 210-pound linebacker from Lithonia, Georgia now has scholarship offers from UAB, Boston College, Duke, UCF, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, UCONN, Indiana, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan.

Kight's communication with Iowa State has mostly been with Cyclone assistant coach Mike Pelton. "I've talked with Coach Pelton and he sends me a lot of letters," he said. "He makes sure I know that they are thinking about me and that they want me there at Iowa State."

Joel tries to bring an all-around game to the field. "I try to do everything as a linebacker," said Kight. "I feel I can stop the run and play sideline-to-sideline. I just really want to be balanced as a player."

Due to some family issues, Kight wasn't able to take any visits this summer but that will change in the fall. "I'm looking to take my visits so that I can find the school that is best for me. I just want to find a place where I can play and get the best education."

Due to his lack of visits, Kight will likely not be making a decision anytime soon. "I would probably rather wait until the end of the season," he said. "Whenever I get that gut feeling, I'll make my decision which could possibly happen during the season."
