Meet Joseph Klerekoper

Meet Joseph Klerekoper

Obviously Texas is familiar territory to new Iowa State Coach Gene Chizik, and he raided the Lone Star State late for more depth on the offensive line in his first recruiting class.

Joseph Klerekoper was one of the final additions to Gene Chizik's first Iowa State recruiting class.  He was second team all-district and a two-year starter in high school.  He was rated a 2-star prospect by Scout.com. We talked to Joseph and his head coach, Tim Russell, about becoming a Cyclone.

CN: Why the Cyclones?

Klerekoper: I became a Cyclone because I was impressed by Coach Chizik and his vision for the future of Iowa State football.  I also like the idea of playing in the Big 12. It also helped that Coach Russell knew Coach Chizik and Coach McFarland when they were coaching at Stephen F. Austin.  He told me that they are very good people.

CN: Who recruited you?

Klerekoper: Coach McFarland talked to me at my school.  On my official visit Coach Fountain showed me around Ames. Plus, when Coach Chizik and Coach McFarland came to my house my family liked them. Matt Hulbert was cool, too when I visited. He showed me around. When I made my visit to ISU the weeend of January 26-28 it was cold and snowy.  We don't get a lot of that in Texas.  I really liked it.

CN: How did you first find out about ISU?

Klerekoper: I first found out about Iowa State University when I started getting mail from them after spring practice of my junior year. When Coach McFarland was hired by Iowa State he really showed a lot of interest in me.

CN: What excited you the most about being a Cyclone?

Klerekoper: What excites me most about becomming a Cyclone is the potential to compete for a Big 12 title and to develop my my potential.

CN: Who else recruited you?

Klerekoper: I was contacted by about 30 Division I schools during the recruiting process. I thought I was going to UTEP.  My dad liked UTEP but he is happy with Iowa State. His father lived in Iowa and attended Central College in Pella. My mom is really excited about me going to ISU because she has family in Missouri and Nebraska who will be able to see me play as well as good friends in Iowa. My brothers and sisters like the Cyclones, too. My family is very supportive.

CN: How have you been preparing to play college football?  Have you decided on a major yet?  What interests you besides football?

Klerekoper: To get ready for Division I competition I've been working on my strength and my quickness. I haven't decided on a major yet but in my spare time I love driving and off-roading.

CN: What are some of Joseph's strengths as a player?

Russell: Joseph is a tremendously talented player with great feet for his size.  He is a hard worker and an asset to any team. He never came off of the field on offense or defense.  His size and agility for his size are great assets.

CN: What does he stil need to work on?

Klerekoper: His biggest weakness will be his experience level but I think in two years he will be one of the best in the Big 12 conference. He just needs to continue to work hard and listen to his coaches.
