It was announced today that Alex Thompson is officially the newest member of the Iowa State men's basketball team. Thompson talked to members of the media over the telephone on Thursday afternoon. Here's what he had to say.

Talk about your decision to come to Iowa State.

Thompson: It's a decision that I'm very excited about. It's nice to have it over with and start playing basketball again.

Were you close to coming to Iowa State initially out of high school?

Thompson: At the time it was an issue with the coach. I think that it was between him and Wayne Morgan.

At the time, if there was more stability would you have come here?

Thompson: It's hard to tell. I didn't really know what was going on with the program and it's just hard to tell I guess.

Were you looking to transfer even if Iowa State didn't hire Greg McDermott?

Thompson: I don't know. I'm just excited to be playing for Coach McDermott. I want to be part of what he's trying to build.

Did he recruit you at all when he was at Northern Iowa?

Thompson: Yeah, a little bit but I committed to Iowa after my junior year. I committed pretty early.

What happened at Iowa?

Thompson: I just felt like it wasn't the best fit for me. I played there for two years and it wasn't a good fit.

Was it playing time?

Thompson: It just wasn't a good fit. I don't know what else to say.

Was there a specific time in the past couple of months when you knew that Iowa State was really where you wanted to be?

Thompson: Right when I got my release I didn't know where I wanted to send it out to. Coach McDermott had just been hired, so I knew that Iowa State was a for sure place that I wanted to look at. I sent my release there and I wanted to talk to them before I talked to anybody else. When I met with Coach McDermott last Wednesday, I was really impressed with him and his coaches. I like where the program is headed.

Have you been talking to Ross Marsden much throughout making this decision?

Thompson: No I haven't spoken to Ross this spring. When everything is done, I'll give him a call and see how everything is going and what his plans are for this summer.

What is it about Coach McDermott and Iowa State that makes you think that you will be happy here when you haven't been happy at the places before?

Thompson: I don't know if you can say that I haven't been happy at the places before. I just like the way that he is really into the team. He develops players. Everything about him I was really impressed with.

You sit out next year, but the following year you'll be playing Iowa here in Ames. What kind of a reception do you think that the fans are going to give you when you take the floor at Hilton, since you initially did leave?

Thompson: I'm not really worried about that. I hope that they respected my decision out of high school and I hope that they respect my decision to come back now. I hope that they accept me when I join Cyclone Nation.

Were there any other schools that you were looking at and you sent your release to?

Thompson: I only sent my release to Iowa State. I have been contacted by St. Louis and Vanderbilt. I wanted to meet with Coach McDermott before I even looked at any other places.

Was this decision made prior to the last game of the season? Did you know that you were probably going to be going somewhere else?

Thompson: No it wasn't. I had to sit back after the season and reflect on it and find out what I wanted to do. I guess I decided that it was in my best interest to transfer.

You were in line for more playing time next year at Iowa, what was the number one factor for leaving?

Thompson: Honestly I played there for two years and it just wasn't a good fit. That's how I look at it. I'm excited to put it behind me and move on to Iowa State and playing back home with the Cyclones and Coach McDermott.

What type of a reaction do you expect to get when you play at Iowa again?

Thompson: I don't know. I think a lot of those fans. They have always been very supportive of me. I had a good experience with them. Going to the rival school probably isn't the best thing but good friends and people that like me there will support me. If I get some negative reaction it's fine too. That's what happens when you transfer to the rival school.

Are you going to talk to Adam Haluska at all about how he handled this?

Thompson: I don't know. I think he handled it really well. For him, he just kept working and kept his head on straight. You can't worry about what people have to say, you just have to stay close to your team. I'm just glad to finally be done with it.
