AMES,
Iowa--Alex Thompson, an Ames native who played two seasons at the University of Iowa, will transfer to Iowa State and join the Cyclone men’s
basketball team, ISU head coach Greg McDermott announced today.
“I’m
excited that Alex has decided to join our program,” McDermott said. “After
meeting with Alex and his family, I’m convinced of his passion to become a
Cyclone. His versatility will give us the flexibility to play him at several
positions.”
Thompson,
a 6-9, 215-pound forward, played in 66 games in his two years with the Hawkeyes.
He averaged 1.6 points while starting three games as a freshman and posted a 2.0
scoring clip last season as a sophomore. His 3-pointer down the stretch vs.
Ohio State helped Iowa secure the 2006 Big Ten Tournament
title.
Thompson
was considered one of the top-100 players nationally after graduating from
Ames
High School in 2004. A
first-team Class 4-A all-state pick from the Des Moines Register, Thompson
averaged 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds in his senior season. Thompson will sit
out the 2006-07 season due to the NCAA transfer rule and will have two seasons
of eligibility.
