Commitment Update: Jefferson ATH James Smith

James Smith.

Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson athlete James Smith won't take his official visit to Iowa State until the third week in January, which means he can't wait to make another trip to Ames.

"My official visit is on January 21st," he said. "I'm excited to go up there, see the campus, meet the players, and just get to know everything better than I do right now. I'll be discussing my classes and everything like that."

James Smith wrapped up his senior season with 836 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns to go along with 115 total tackles and one interception as a defensive back. Smith struggled to put up the offensive numbers he did a year ago, when 1,369 yards on 239 carries, but a lot of that could be attributed to a green offensive line.

Smith is still just as excited about the Cyclones as he was the day he made a commitment in early August.

"I think I'm even more happy right now," he said. "I can't wait to get up there. Everything I've seen so far I've been pretty impressed with. I'm happy to be a Cyclone. If I play hard, hopefully I can get in the mix somewhere." Smith's future position appears to be up in the air, however.

"They're recruiting me to play either running back or defensive back," he said.

Smith is one of nine known Cyclone commitments for the Class of 2005.
