Cyclones Make Push for Walton

With the recent losses of marquee offensive line recruits Dain Wise and Jon Cooper, Iowa State is making an even bigger push for Allen High School guard J.D. Walton. The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder made his official visit to Ames this weekend, and says the Cyclones are in good shape.

"There were a lot of recruits up there and we got to hang out a lot," said J.D. Walton, who earned first-team all-district honors for a team that finished 9-3 and made the second round of playoffs. "I got to talk to all of the players and had a real good time. The coaching staff was great. I liked a lot up there. The indoor facility was really nice and I'd really like to play for the offensive line coach (Barney Cotton). He has a real good coaching style."

Although Walton has been an ISU offer kid for months now and valuable target in this recruiting class, his stock shot up even further this week when the Cyclones missed on a few other preps. He's sensing some of that ‘love' from the coaches in Ames.

"They were telling me that they didn't just want me, but they really needed me," Walton said. "That was a really big thing for me, and made me think higher of them. Coming in and getting some playing time early in my career would be great."

Cyclone fans might not have to wait very long for Walton's announcement, as he's expected to make one before the New Year.

"Right now I've got it narrowed down to Arizona State and Iowa State," he said. "I'm going to visit Arizona State next weekend. I don't have any other visits scheduled for next month, and I'd like to make a decision before Christmas. Iowa State is definitely in the mix."
