Heinrich Shines at ISU Camp

AllCyclones.com caught up with 2016 Urbandale (IA) guard Jake Heinrich following his camp Friday night at Iowa State. Heinrich will stay in Ames for Saturday's Junior Day

The best player at Iowa State's camp Friday night was one of the youngest.

Urbandale (IA) offensive guard Jake Heinrich, a member of the 2016 class and ranked in the Scout Top 300, did nothing to make the Cyclones regret offering him the other week, flashing his technical skills, his nastiness and his athleticism over the course of the evening.

"We had already been signed up (before the offer) and then figured I might as well come out and compete so I just wanted to solidify myself, just make sure I performed well out there," Heinrich told AllCyclones.com late Friday. "I think I did well, got plenty of reps on the run and the pass, think I did good. Just got to work on my hands a bit, just bring them in. Other than that [O-line coach Brandon] Blaney said I did real well with my aggressiveness and my finish and using my feet."

Heinrich will stay the night in Ames, bunking with former high school teammate Allen Lazard, then attend Iowa State's elite Junior Day.

"I'm real excited for that," he said. "I've been to a few games but now I'll get to see the academics and go more in-depth, the buildings and dorms and stuff."

It was important for the Cyclones to be the first school to offer Heinrich, who's picking up a lot of interest from Nebraska and some recently from Minnesota. Heinrich grew up cheering for Iowa State and is close with Lazard, the four-star wideout who signed in 2014.

Other schools are bound to jump in on the No. 8 guard in the nation but Iowa State is in tremendous shape.

"I definitely like Iowa State," Heinrich said. "Coach Blaney, I really like him. I like Coach Shane [Burnham] and Coach [Paul] Rhoads, obviously. I'm excited for Saturday and hopefully that'll help improve Iowa State in my mind."

When asked if he had a timeline for a commitment, Heinrich said, "At this point, it hasn't crossed my mind just yet."
