DeLira On Point

Might Dominic DeLira be the latest Lake Travis (TX) quarterback who ends up at a Big 12 school? He impressed Iowa State's coaches Saturday at camp and now must wait a little longer to see if he picks up an offer

The wind was howling, anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour, sending paper cups scurrying across the grass at Iowa State's Johnny Majors Practice field.

And Dominic DeLira kept slingin' it.

The 2015 Lake Travis (TX) quarterback put on an impressive performance Saturday at the Cyclones' camp, a show that belied his lean frame, six and a half feet and 176 pounds heavy. Against and with the wind, DeLira's spirals remained tight, his placement mostly perfect, and there were only a few incompletions to be had throughout the two-hour session, despite an unfamiliar and unsteady group of pass-catchers.

"I had a good time — it doesn't matter rain, shine, wind, I'm gonna go out there and play and show them what I'm about," DeLira told AllCyclones.com afterward. "I'm very accurate, I work a lot on it. I can throw the deep ball, too, when I need to.

"It's with all the training I've done. I'm always working. I'm throwing almost every single day of the week."

The early-morning tests went well, too. DeLira ran a 4.66 40-yard dash, had a broad jump of 9-feet-6 inches and performed well in the pro agility drill, which measures short-distance explosiveness.

DeLira will have to wait a little longer to see if he's the latest Lake Travis quarterback to end up at a Big 12 school. The streak began with Todd Reesing in the mid-2000s — he made sweet music with Mark Mangino at Kansas — and continued with Garrett Gilbert (Texas, '09), Michael Brewer (Texas Tech, '11) and Baker Mayfield, who walked on at Tech last fall. In the offseason, Brewer transferred to Virginia Tech and Mayfield switched to Oklahoma. Gilbert ended his career at SMU and was a sixth-round draft pick of the Rams.

The Cyclones worked out Illinois quarterbacks Demry Croft and Billy Bahl during their June 7 camp and will have Sage Attwood, from Florida, in town next week. A decision on who to offer is expected to follow.

"They're giving everybody a chance and are being men of their words," Brewer said. "They had kids up the past week they were looking at, they had me and Cody Long (Estero, FL) this week they were looking at today and they have two coming next weekend. They're gonna be fair and let everyone have their chance and they'll let me know more about it Saturday."

Receivers coach Tommy Mangino, the lead Central Texas recruiter, has led the charge on DeLira, who competed at the Dallas Elite 11 Regional this spring.

"They were really impressed with what I did today. Coach Tommy Mangino's really been talking me up to all the coaches. They felt pretty good with what they heard."

In his first season as a starter, DeLira threw for 2,329 yards (60 percent completion) and 25 touchdowns to six interceptions, taking the Cavaliers to a 12-2 record. DeLira was named the District 15 5-A Newcomer of the Year. New Mexico and North Texas are showing interest in DeLira.

DeLira has been a Texas lifer but felt at home in Central Iowa.

"I love it," he said. "Everybody was really welcoming, everybody was really nice. It's different from Austin. It's a perfect fit."
