At 1-8 with three games left, Iowa State can finish no better than 4-8 in 2013, which would constitute the worst season of the Paul Rhoads era.
The Cyclones entered the season with 12 players verbally committed and have added to that list, with no decommits.
The below players were surveyed at various points in the season, each asked to give their thoughts on Iowa State's poor record.
Scott Schaffner (surveyed Oct. 13, with ISU at 1-8): "Two years ago they had an amazing year, the program looked like it was going up. They graduated a lot of players. This year they're really young. I feel like we have a really good recruiting class. Maybe a couple of us can start, if not we can get together as a team and build."
Cole Anderson (Oct. 11, with ISU at 1-8): "It's obviously pretty tough. You don't ever want to see your team do so poorly. But then you watch them play, see how you young and injury riddled they are and how hard they play. You know coach Rhoads has that program headed in right direction. You're gonna have tough seasons.
"Look at how young the guys who are playing are. It's cool to see how young guys are getting experience. Sure, you'd like to see the record flipped around.
"We can't leave ames without a couple Big 12 rings on our fingers. That's what we're working on and are gonna build for."
Colin Downing (Oct. 11, with ISU at 1-8): "There was definitely a point in time where I didn't want to a part of a losing program. But when it comes down to it, it's about more than the record.
"If anything, it's promising, these guys are holding it together. They lost to Texas by one point, TCU by a last-minute touchdown. When I look at who's on the field, I don't think there's been a game where they have more than half the team that [should be starting] is healthy."
Allen Lazard (Oct. 26, with ISU at 1-5): "Hopefully I can help out. ... I've just got to grow as an individual and hopefully help out my team that way."
Tommy Mister (Oct. 20, with ISU at 1-5): "(Coach) Paul Rhoads needs playmakers to win and [Lazard and I] are his playmakers, we're gonna get it done." (photographed above
