Rohach to Start vs TCU ... Maybe

Rohach wasn't told he was the starter and found out he was QB1 on the depth chart via text message from his cousin

Grant Rohach is listed atop the depth chart for Saturday's game against TCU (3-6), but Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said Monday morning he had not decided who would start at quarterback against the Horned Frogs.

"Depending on how this week goes Sam [Richardson] could run out there to be the starting quarterback against TCU," Rhoads said.

Rhoads said the Cyclones will use the week of practice to determine a starter and will not announce a decision prior to the game. Iowa State runs at a quick enough practice tempo to get each quarterback equal snaps, the difference being who runs with the first-teamers and who's with the second-teamers.

Said Rohach, who wasn't told he was the starter and found out he was QB1 on the depth chart via text message from his cousin: "I'm excited for the opportunity. Obviously every week it's going to be a competition for the quarterback spot. All I can control is how well I play."

Although Richardson and Rohach possess similar skillsets and run the same offense, Rhoads believes a veil of secrecy regarding the position can throw a wrench into TCU's gameplan.

Redshirt sophomore Sam Richardson has started every game this season for the Cyclones (1-7), but Rohach alternated with Richardson at Baylor, subbed in for him because of injury against Oklahoma State and replaced a benched Richardson in Saturday's loss at Kansas State.

A redshirt freshman from California, Rohach has completed 31 of 60 passes (51.7 percent) with 250 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He averages 4.2 yards per attempt.

Richardson took over the ISU starting role for the final two games of 2012 after lighting up Kansas off the bench with four touchdowns. On the season he is 120-for-217 (55.3 percent) for 1,388 yards, 11 scores and seven picks. He's averaging 6.4 yards an attempt.

Rohach replaced Richardson in the second quarter of Iowa State's 41-7 loss to Kansas State. Richardson has been hobbled by an ankle injury since the season opener. He was knocked out of the Oklahoma State game after taking an awkward hit to his head and neck.
