Heartbreaker in Ames

As Case McCoy drove Texas down the field in the final minutes, the euphoria that had enveloped the stadium just moments earlier — a six-point leave, with three minutes left — began to dissipate, another feeling rising in: dread

The white-knuckle affair went back and forth, with the teams trading scores, blunders and unreal plays. A Longhorns Hail Mary pass to end the half was one-upped by a 97-yard touchdown reception by Quenton Bundrage, the longest play in the history of Jack Trice Stadium.

In the end, the game was just close enough to rip your heart out. Iowa State, 30. Texas, somehow, 31.

But as Case McCoy drove Texas down the field in the final minutes, the euphoria that had enveloped the stadium just moments earlier — a six-point leave, with three minutes left — began to dissipate, another feeling rising in: dread.

And then the Longhorns finally struck, the gut punch a one-yard touchdown plunge by McCoy, just after the Cyclones thought they had recovered a fumble in a goal line scrum, a call that was upheld, just after the Cyclones were flagged for pass interference on a play that would have brought up fourth down for Texas. Right before the score, Johnathan Gray fumbled again, recovering it on his own.

The Cyclones, with 51 seconds left, took over at their own 25-yard line and drove past midfield before Richardson was intercepted by Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat off a deflection.

AllCyclones will have plenty more on the game.
