A sloppy, uninspiring first half has Iowa State down 13-0 to Iowa.
The score should be 10-0. A bad decision by Sam Richardson — a forced pass into coverage was picked off by Iowa linebacker Jake Morris and returned 27 yards — raised the count to 13-0. In the waning seconds of the half, Aaron Wimberly fumbled a kick return. Had the Cyclones not recovered, the score would be 16-0.
Richardson has been held in check. He has zero net yards rushing and is averaging only 2.8 yards per pass attempt. The ground game hasn't helped him: The Cyclones have 10 yards on 11 attempts, with neither James White nor Shontrelle Johnson able to get going.
On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Wally Burnham has stuck with his conservative 4-3 base. After being burned a few times by a bootlegging Jake Rudock — set up by a heavy dosage of stretch runs — the Cyclones have adjusted, but still can't do much to stop Iowa back Mark Weisman, who has 77 yards on 16 carries.
