L.A. Southwest  S Tevin Carter

(11/8/2012) A look at some of the top defensive back performances over the past week and which players are standing out for their teams so far this season. This is by no means all-inclusive, but just a snapshot of some of the top players at the position so far this year...

L.A. Southwest S Tevin Carter - Carter, who signed with California out of high school, posted 13 tackles (12 solo) and an interception last week, but his team still dropped their game against Antelope Valley 35-3. This season, Carter has racked up 68 tackles and three interceptions for the Cougars.


Santa Barbara S Mitch Nelson - Nelson had eight tackles and returned an interception 92 yards for a two-point conversion in Santa Barbara's 36-18 win over Glendale. For the season, Nelson ranks third on the team with 64 tackles and has posted three interceptions, five passes defensed and a forced fumble.


Ventura S Lakeith Murray - Murray was named the National Northern Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting 10 tackles (five solo), 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack as the Pirates finished 10-0 for the first time in program history, getting a 27-14 win over Pasadena. The sophomore defensive back has racked up 26 tackles, one sack and two interceptions.


Southwestern S Kellon Delarosa - Delarosa had a huge game for the Jags last week, posting 10 tackles, a pick and a fumble recovery as Southwestern got a 56-21 win over Victor Valley last weekend. The sophomore ranks third on the team with 48 tackles, one interception and five passes defensed this season.


West L.A. CB Brandon Chinke - West L.A. got a 26-16 win over L.A. Valley last week and Chinke was a big reason why posting five tackles, one pick and two passes defensed, earning him American Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.


College of the Canyons S Jesse Sampson - The sophomore had a solid game for the Cougars, racking up 11 tackles from his safety spot to help lead COC to a 38-36 win over Cerritos. Sampson has posted 46 tackles and an interception in eight games this season.


Bakersfield CB Mercy Maston - Maston had eight tackles last week in Bakersfield's 56-27 over Allan Hancock. The sophomore has racked up 46 tackles, two interceptions and six passes defensed, to go along with a blocked kick this season.


DeAnza CB Sh'quil Green - The Dons got a 46-43 win over College of San Mateo last weekend and Green was a big reason why posting five tackles and two interceptions. The sophomore corner has 33 tackles, five picks and eight passes defensed for DeAnza this season.


Diablo Valley CB Derrick Johnson - Johnson had a solid game last week in DVC's 38-15 win over Sacramento posting seven tackles, two tackles-for-loss and one pick. The freshman has racked up 33 tackles and three interceptions so far this season.


East Mississippi S Justin Cox - Cox has had a great season for the Lions, posting 56 tackles and six interceptions on the season.


Copiah-Lincoln CB Kalen Jackson - Jackson posted 14 tackles last week in Co-Lin's 47-46 win over East Mississippi last weekend. This season, the freshman DB has posted 70 tackles, four tackles-for-loss and three passes defensed.


Kilgore CB James Jones - Jones has 46 tackles and four interceptions, two of which he took back for touchdowns, on the season for the Rangers.


Arizona Western CB Nate Willis - Willis notched seven tackles and two passes defensed last week in the Matadors' 59-30 win over New Mexico Military last week. Even though teams have thrown away from him for most of the season, Willis has posted 19 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception.


Cisco CB Ricky Pratt - The sophomore had a solid season for Cisco in 2012 posting 36 tackles, three interceptions, one sack and eight passes defensed.


Nassau S Marc Mauro - Mauro, a sophomore, posted 22 tackles, seven passes defensed and a team and conference-leading five picks for the third-ranked Lions.


Louisburg CB/S Fred Howard - Howard posted four picks, 28 tackles and 14 passes defensed for the Hurricanes this season.


College of DuPage CB Jaylan Bailey - Bailey finished second on the Chaparrals with 46 tackles while also posting seven passes defensed.


College of DuPage S Ikeem Higgs - Higgs led DuPage in interceptions with three while also posting 10 passes defensed and 28 tackles.


Butler S Max Martinez - Martinez filled up the stat sheet last weekend in the Grizzlies' 52-17 win over Garden City posting seven tackles, one sack, one interception and three passes defensed. This season, the sophomore has posted 48 tackles, one sack, two tackles-for-loss, three interceptions and five passes defensed for second-ranked Butler.


Fort Scott CB Kevin Short - The sophomore corner racked up 29 tackles, one sack and led the team in picks (5) and passes defensed (7).


Hutchinson CB Terrell Hannah - The freshman posted a team-leading five interceptions to go along with 51 tackles and six passes defensed.


Jones CB Corey Trim - The sophomore corner posted a team-leading four interceptions to go along with 46 tackles this season for the Bobcats.


Snow CB Zach Christian - Christian had a team-leading four picks and 10 passes defensed to go along with 25 tackles and a sack for Snow in the secondary this season.
